“Berriff is a courageous man, very physical in his methods of seeing and creating images.”
Werner Herzog - International Film Director
Paul Berriff is one of Britain’s most accomplished television documentary film makers.
In the mid 60’s Paul started his career in still photography as a press photographer with the Yorkshire Evening Post in Leeds. In 1967 television stations started opening up around the country. With the introduction of local TV news Paul anticipated that the regional newsrooms would lead to the demise of the local paper as an immediate source for hard news.So in September 1967 Paul made the switch from stills to movie images and became the youngest film cameraman employed by BBC TV News in Leeds. His career then took off. Paul moved into documentary production and won numerous awards, including a BAFTA, for his programmes. He is still making award winning films.
During a shopping expedition in 2008 with his wife Hilary he noticed that none of the departmental stores in Harrogate were selling pictures of Yorkshire. Further investigation confirmed his observation. Good quality photographs of Yorkshire were almost impossible to find. So in the summer of 2008 Paul decided to return to the world of stills photography he had left behind in 1967. His main subject - Yorkshire. Paul has set up his small photo workshop in his home market town of Bedale and between movie assignments spends his time creating images of his favourite county.
This website is the beginning of his journey to record stunning images of the people and places in Yorkshire with new images being added regularly. Most of Paul’s photographs are produced in monochrome which, says Paul, tend to be more dramatic than colour. “Large frame mounted photos look stunning on any wall and black and white makes you stop and study them much closer.”
Prints are available of all the images on this site. Each photograph is individually produced and personally signed by Paul Berriff and the mounted photographs beautifully framed by Julia at Noble Fine Art.
